A very cute HD remake of a Zelda GBC game. You can’t include Galaxy 2 in this bundle and still expect it to sell for $60.Ĥ. There is a development cost to get these three games running on Switch with Switch controls.ģ. The Wii U was backwards compatible with the Wii, so Nintendo could literally do $20 ROM dumps for Wii games (and you had to use Wii controls, you couldn’t use the gamepad). Sat 19th Sep I’ve about given up trying to convince people here that it isn’t just a lazy cash grab.ġ.What is the goal of these, really? Enter the difficulty in "reviewing" and rating this release. Making the camera better, even, would really change what the games are and were. I would actually like to see how Nintendo might reimagine and invent these games, but really that's what each new 3D Mario does already. In the end, I think a lot of the core fans of these games that played them originally might look at a totally redone graphics makeover, play it for 5 minutes, then switch to the mode where it is much closer to the original. Another review that holds it up to a very subjective bar of "what could have been" or what some other remasters have done, would rate it more poorly. Thing is, the review is reviewing the games, and the games remain intact. So, it is expected there will be of the most critical people in that group. I will give you this: 3D Mario players are much smaller group than 2D Mario players, and when you are going back to the vault of old games, it is self-selecting those that even care about the old games to begin with, which is a smaller group. That is a very small percentage of Mario fans. They like to talk details and the old days. There are super fans and they gather into comment sections like this. One downside is that colour gradients and transparency effects (used to create the illusion of space) have "significant" colour banding and this may be distracting to some players. Video sequences have been re-rendered at a higher resolution, and menus and HUD elements have received a fresh lick of paint. In terms of frame rate, it's the only one of the lot that runs at 60fps. It also aims for a "full 1080p" and appears to use resolution scaling based on on-screen activity - meaning the image quality isn't always the best. Super Mario Galaxy is described as the "second-best" in this collection. To me, it feels like this game received the most effort, even if the frame rate isn't quite what I'd like to see." "Super Mario Sunshine benefits the most from this remaster - the wider aspect ratio and sharper distant detail makes it easier to parse its large levels, it works really well, plus the new art is always appreciated.

In saying this, it's still apparently the best of the three games in this collection. One side effect of the Switch version is that there are now "mild frame pacing issues" - meaning it's not even as fluid as the original release.

John says it's "disappointing" considering how early prototypes of Sunshine were originally shown at 60fps and the homebrew community has also been able to double the frame rate. It's capped at 30fps, just like the original. Where this particular game falls short is the frame rate. Textures have also improved and there's superior video sequence playback, with "some kind of AI upscaling" used to make cinematics look a little better. Like Super Mario 64, the UI has been recreated at a higher resolution - with sharped fonts and art design. As a result of this, the HUD elements now take up less screen space as they've been pushed out to the edges.

Super Mario Sunshine jumps from 480p to a "full 1080p" and the aspect ratio is bumped to 16:9 (unlike Super Mario 64). Of course, it's better than the previous Virtual Console releases, so that's something." Super Mario Sunshine "While the art enhancements are certainly welcome, the lack of a 60 frames per second mode, combined with the original 4:3 aspect ratio and incaccurate texture filter makes it difficult for me to play this over the original version.
